ORLANDO DIVERS ADVANCE TO USA DIVING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ORLANDO, Florida – Against fierce competition from Texas divers at Zones in Fort Lauderdale over the Fourth of July weekend, Team Orlando Diving will have 11 divers advancing to USA Diving National and Age Group Championships to be held in Tucson, Arizona July 23 – 31, 2010.

Top finishers for Team Orlando include Cinzia Calabretta, who will compete on 1 and 3 Meter and Platform – Cherie Hammond on 1 and 3 Meter and Tom Neubacher on 1 and 3 Meter and Platform – all in the 16-18 year old Group.

14 – 15 year olds traveling to Tucson will be Sydney Couch, Wallace Layland and Joseph Dowd – each competing on all 3 boards, while Shelby Lerew will compete on 1 and 3 Meter.

Once again – the younger kids did quite well with 12 – 13 year olds Rileigh Knox, Mya Kraeger and Abby Howell advancing to compete on the 1 and 3 Meter boards – with Avery Saunders competing on all 3 boards in the 11 and under group.

The Zones meet was one of 5 final qualifying Meets conducted throughout the country to determine finalists for the annual USA Diving/Speedo Diving Junior National Championships.

The top 6 finishers, beyond those already pre-qualified, on each springboard and platform event from Zone D Championships qualify for the Junior National Championships while divers finishing in 7th through 12th place earned the right to compete in USA Diving’s Age Group National Championships.

Team Orlando will also be very well represented at the AAU National Championships being held in Coral Springs in August with Chelsea Uranaka, Grayson Kim, Maggie Merriman, , Grace Cable, Jack Dowd
Emma Kraeger, Erin Potter, Victoria Chan and Maddie Howell all competing.

AT& T NATIONAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meanwhile – Four Team Orlando Divers will join 125 of the very best divers in the country, having qualified to compete in the AT & T Senior National Championships being held at Texas A & M August 10 – 15, 2010 where former Team Orlando Head Coach Jay Lerew now leads the Texas A & M divers.

Making the cut from Senior Zones in Tallahassee this past weekend to join other U.S. Zones top five finishers who will be traveling to Texas A & M as members of the elite group of 125 are: Cinzia Calabretta who will compete on Platform – Tom Neubacher who will compete in 1 and 3 Meter – Thea Vock who made the cut on 1 and 3 Meter and Platform and Shelby Lerew who will team up with Columbus, Ohio U.S. Elite diver Rachel Rubadue for the Women’s 3 Meter Synchro contest, competing against, among others, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Laura Wilkinson and her synchro partner, fellow Woodlands, Texas diver Kaylea Arnett.

The AT&T National Championship pits the top 125 divers from across the country to vie for ten national championship titles in men’s and women’s 1 Meter springboard, 3 Meter springboard, 10 Meter Platform and Synchronized 3 Meter and 10 Meter Platform events.

USA Diving is recognized as the national governing body of the sport of diving within the United States.

16 Team Orlando divers make Zone D meet in Fort Lauderdale

Sixteen divers from Team Orlando Diving advanced to the USA Diving Summer Junior Zone D Championships after regionals this month in Moultrie, Ga. The top 15 finishers on each springboard event qualified for the Zone D Championships from June 30-July 3 in Fort Lauderdale.

Cinzia Calabretta of Team Orlando was the top girls points leader at regionals, winning gold on the one- and three-meter events and silver on the platform in the 16-18 age group. Sydney Couch took gold on the three-meter in the 14-15 age group, Rileigh Knox won the three-meter event for 12-13-year-olds and Mya Kraeger took gold in the platform in the 12-13 division. Maggie Merriman won the platform category for 11-under divers.

Also advancing to the Zone D meet from Team Orlando are Chelsea Uranaka (16-18), Shelby Lerew (14-15), Emma Kraeger (12-13), Abigail Howell (12-13), brothers Joey and Jack Dowd, Avery Saunders (11-under), Grayson Kim (11-under), Lauren Barton, Victoria Chan and Erin Potter.

Divers finishing in the top six in Fort Lauderdale will advance to the Speedo Junior National Championships in Tucson, Ariz., from July 23-27. Divers placing in seventh through 12th place will be eligible to compete in the Age Group National Championships from July 29-31, also in Tucson.

ORLANDO DIVERS ADVANCE TO USA DIVING SUMMER ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS

ORLANDO, Florida – 16 divers from Team Orlando Diving have advanced to the USA Diving Summer Junior Zone D Championships as a result of their performances at the USA Diving Junior Summer Region 7 Championships, held this past weekend in Moultrie, Georgia.  The region meet was one of 10 Region Championships conducted throughout the country over the course of this past and upcoming weekends.

Girls 11+ Under 3M. Avery Saunders 3rd, Grayson Kim 6th, Maggie Merriman 4th.

The top 15 finishers on each springboard event from Region 7 Championships qualify for the Zone D Championships, which will be held June 30th – July 3rd at the Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Top finishers for Team Orlando include Cinzia Calabretta, top girls point leader for the Meet, winning Gold Medals on 1 and 3 Meter and Silver on Platform in the 16-18 age group – Chelsea Uranaka, taking the Silver on 3 Meter, also in the 16-18 age group – 14-15 year olds Sydney Couch taking Gold on 3 meter and Platform and Bronze on 1 meter and Shelby Lerew winning Silver 1 meter.

The younger team members also did well with 12-13 year old 1 meter medal winners Rileigh Knox and Mya Kraeger taking first and second with the same results in the 3 meter contest. Mya also went on to take Gold in Platform – sharing the medal stand with her sister Emma who took Silver on Platform, with team mate Abigail Howell placing 3rd .

Brothers Joey and Jack Dowd took home Silver Medals in Platform in their respective age groups with Joey tacking on a Bronze in his 1 meter event.

In the 11 and under Group – Platform placements were Maggie Merriman, Avery Saunders and Grayson Kim taking the top 3 spots while Avery Saunders took 3rd in 3 meter.

Divers finishing in the Top Six in Fort Lauderdale will advance to the USA Diving’s Speedo Junior National Championships to be held in Tucson, Arizona July 23rd  – 27th  while Divers finishing in 7th through 12th place will earn the right to compete in USA Diving’s Age Group National Championships July 29th – 31st – also being held in Tucson.

Cherie Hammond of the Dr. Phillips area has pre-qualified for the USA National Championships by placing in the Top Three at Winter East National Championships held at Miami of Ohio University in April – thereby bypassing the necessity to compete in Moultrie and Fort Lauderdale.  Additionally – Wallace Layland of South Orlando is also pre-qualified as a member of the 2009 Junior Pan Am Team.

Additional Team Members advancing from their Regional performance are Lauren Barton, Victoria Chan and Erin Potter.

Emily Padgett, a senior at Fletcher High, has been named a 2010 Academic All American for diving. Emily is ranked in the top 1% of her class and has a 4.6 GPA. She is a straight A student who has never made anything less than an A throughout her entire academic career. Emily is a recipient of the Principal’s Leadership Award, the National Youth Character Award, the AP Language Award, the American Legion Scholarship, is an AP Scholar and a graduate of Youth Leadership Jacksonville. Emily has been accepted in the Honors Program at the University of Florida and looks forward to diving for the Gators!
